How Third-Place Teams Were Placed in the Round of 32
The third-place system is the most confusing part of the World Cup 2026 knockout race.
The best third-placed teams are not simply ranked from first to eighth and then placed into the bracket in that order.

Group C Knockout Race
World Cup 2026 Group C is complete.
Brazil finished first after beating Scotland 3-0. Morocco finished second after beating Haiti 4-2. Scotland finished third with three points, and Haiti finished fourth with zero points.
Brazil and Morocco both finished on seven points. Brazil took first place on goal difference after two 3-0 wins, one against Haiti and one against Scotland.
Morocco also made a major statement. They drew with Brazil, beat Scotland 1-0, then beat Haiti 4-2. Seven points from this group proves that Morocco are still a serious knockout-stage team.

The USA took control early by beating Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0. Those two wins gave the co-hosts enough margin to finish first, even after the final-matchday shock against Türkiye.

The final matchday brought a late twist. Ecuador beat Germany 2-1, while Côte d’Ivoire beat Curaçao 2-0. Those results completed the group with Germany and Côte d’Ivoire both on six points, Ecuador on four and Curaçao on one.

Cabo Verde are one of the stories of the tournament. They did not win a match, but three draws were enough to finish second and reach the Round of 32 on their World Cup debut.
The results tell the story: 0-0 against Spain, 2-2 against Uruguay and 0-0 against Saudi Arabia.
