Best bet: Arsenal to beat Coventry City
Potential upset: Bournemouth against Manchester City
Game of the weekend: Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Arsenal vs Coventry City Prediction

Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City

There could hardly be a more dramatic way for Coventry to return to the Premier League after 25 years.

Their reward is an immediate trip to the defending champions.

Coventry earned promotion by playing with conviction rather than behaving like a club simply trying to survive matches. But the Emirates presents a different type of problem.

Arsenal enter the season as champions and have already produced an early warning. Their 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City showed a side still capable of controlling territory, protecting itself after losing the ball and punishing opponents when pressure starts to accumulate.

The champions are not without concerns. William Saliba is expected to miss an extended period with a back problem, while Jurrien Timber is also sidelined. But Arsenal’s attacking preparation has been encouraging.

Christos Tzolis produced two assists against City and finished pre-season with six, the highest total recorded by a Premier League player over the summer. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice have also returned after their post-World Cup breaks.

Coventry’s return after a quarter of a century is one of the stories of the season before a ball has even been kicked.

They should not abandon the bravery that brought them here.

The problem is that Arsenal are exceptionally good at turning brave opponents into stretched ones.

Coventry may compete for long periods. Arsenal should eventually make the difference look comfortable.

Hull City vs Manchester United Prediction

Prediction: Hull City 1-2 Manchester United

This is exactly the type of opening fixture Manchester United would probably rather avoid.

Hull will have the emotion of their Premier League return, a loud home crowd and almost none of the pressure carried by their visitors.

Oli McBurnie enters the season after scoring twice during pre-season and gives Sergej Jakirović a clear reference point against a United defence that will have to deal with crosses, second balls and direct attacks.

Hull will, however, be without Charlie Hughes for the opener.

United arrive with far greater individual quality but less certainty about how quickly everything will click.

Michael Carrick’s team lost their final friendly 4-2 against AC Milan. Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha were among those still building match sharpness after returning late, while Benjamin Sesko did not play at all during pre-season.

Bryan Mbeumo has looked considerably sharper, producing three goals and an assist.

That combination makes this dangerous.

Hull do not need to dominate possession. They need to keep the crowd involved, make United defend repeated deliveries and turn the afternoon into something physical and emotional.

United should still have enough attacking quality to escape with three points.

It probably will not feel comfortable.

Everton vs Crystal Palace Prediction

Prediction: Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace

Two teams with ambitions beyond merely staying in the division meet in one of the weekend’s hardest matches to predict.

Everton’s objective has moved beyond survival. David Moyes has greater stability than he did a year ago and his side should again be difficult to play through.

There have been some interesting pre-season adjustments.

Moyes experimented with wing-backs, although his preference has generally remained a traditional back four. Jordan Pickford returned for the final friendly against Lille, while Iliman Ndiaye appears to have strengthened his position as Everton’s primary penalty taker.

Crystal Palace are beginning a new managerial era under Pierre Sage.

Yet the transition may be less radical than the managerial change suggests.

Sage continued using a back three in Palace’s final friendly, preserving the type of structure that allows the wing-backs to attack aggressively.

That could make the game unusually balanced.

Everton should be able to prevent Palace from dominating transitions.

Palace should have enough speed and width to prevent Everton from becoming comfortable.

A draw feels more likely than either side taking control.

Ipswich Town vs Sunderland Prediction

Prediction: Ipswich Town 1-1 Sunderland

Ipswich have rebuilt as if they remember exactly what went wrong during their previous Premier League campaign.

Gary O’Neil now has a squad with greater top-flight experience, more physical power and more ways to attack.

Their final preparation was encouraging.

Ipswich beat Union Berlin 4-2, with Jack Clarke, Emersonn, Dara O’Shea and Kasey McAteer all scoring. Issa Diop also started alongside Jacob Greaves in central defence, while new goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen has started the club’s last two matches.

Sunderland, though, are no longer an inexperienced promoted side.

Their remarkable previous Premier League season changed expectations around the club, and continuity under Régis Le Bris gives them something many opponents are still trying to establish.

Enzo Le Fée has been one of Sunderland’s standout players in preparation, scoring three times from an advanced midfield role.

Portman Road should give Ipswich energy.

Sunderland’s greater recent Premier League continuity should give them periods of control when the match becomes frantic.

Neither advantage looks quite large enough to decide it.

Nottingham Forest vs Leeds United Prediction

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Leeds United

This may become one of the weekend’s most tactically revealing games.

Oliver Glasner has wasted little time changing Nottingham Forest.

His familiar 3-4-3 has already appeared during pre-season, placing greater attacking responsibility on wing-backs Neco Williams and Ola Aina.

Igor Jesus has also entered the season in strong form after scoring four goals in six pre-season appearances.

Leeds are increasingly comfortable with their own back-three structure.

Daniel Farke’s team ended pre-season with a 4-0 victory over Augsburg. New signing Tarik Muharemović appears to have established himself in defence, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin supplied two assists in that final warm-up after scoring three times earlier in pre-season.

That makes this less straightforward than Forest supporters might expect.

Forest should look to attack the spaces outside Leeds’ central defenders, while Leeds can cause problems if they establish their wing-backs high enough to push Forest backwards.

Home advantage and Forest’s transition threat just tilt it towards Glasner’s side.

Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction

Prediction: Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

There may not be another opening-weekend match with greater potential for tactical chaos.

Brentford begin the season believing Europe is a realistic target, and their final pre-season performance did little to reduce that optimism.

They beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-0.

Igor Thiago scored twice, adding to his goal against Stade Rennais, while Kevin Schade and Dango Ouattara were also on target.

Tottenham are moving in a different direction under Roberto De Zerbi.

The ambition is obvious: greater positional control, more confidence in possession and a team capable of manipulating opponents rather than merely reacting to them.

But Brentford away is not an especially forgiving place to learn a new system.

Several important Tottenham players had limited or no pre-season minutes after the World Cup. De Zerbi has also confirmed Antonin Kinsky as his new No.1, while Richarlison scored in each of his final two warm-up appearances.

Spurs may eventually become one of the league’s most interesting possession teams.

On opening weekend, however, Brentford’s established attacking relationships could expose every moment of hesitation.

Goals at both ends look likely.

Brighton vs Aston Villa Prediction

Prediction: Brighton 2-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa may possess the higher ceiling over a full season.

The timing of this fixture favours Brighton.

Villa’s preparation has been fragmented by the World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martínez did not play during pre-season after being given extended breaks, while Tammy Abraham was forced off injured in the final friendly.

Alejandro Garnacho and Johan Manzambi have also had disrupted preparations.

That matters against Brighton.

Fabian Hürzeler’s side are comfortable making matches uncomfortable.

They can press high, attack with numbers and force opponents into positional decisions before those opponents have fully settled into the rhythm of a new season.

Brighton have their own problems. Yankuba Minteh could be absent for a significant period, potentially removing one of their most explosive attacking outlets.

Georginio Rutter, however, started Brighton’s final two friendlies and Pascal Groß appears to have taken responsibility from the penalty spot.

Aston Villa remain one of the league’s most intriguing teams.

The question is not how good they can become.

It is whether they are ready to be that good immediately.

Brighton’s preparation and home advantage could decide this one.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth Prediction

Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth

The first meaningful match of Manchester City’s new era ended with Arsenal beating them 3-0.

It would be easy to overreact.

It would also be a mistake to ignore what the defeat revealed.

City begin the league season without Rodri after the midfielder underwent back surgery, while several tactical relationships are still developing. Erling Haaland played only 53 minutes in the Community Shield, his first appearance of pre-season after returning from the World Cup.

Bournemouth are precisely the kind of opponent capable of testing uncertainty.

Their capacity to press, attack space and force opponents to make quick decisions gives them a chance of making this much more uncomfortable than the badge comparison suggests.

Junior Kroupi is unavailable following foot surgery, but Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier have both built significant pre-season minutes, while Evanilson finished the summer with three goals.

City should still win.

Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Phil Foden and the rest of their attacking options provide enough individual quality to decide a match even when the collective structure is imperfect.

But Bournemouth are our potential upset for a reason.

If City’s midfield remains vulnerable after turnovers, the visitors will have opportunities.

Newcastle vs Liverpool is Soccer Herald’s Game of the Weekend for Premier League Matchweek 1 at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool Prediction

Prediction: Newcastle United 1-2 Liverpool

The standout fixture of the opening weekend comes at St James’ Park.

Both clubs begin the season under relatively new tactical leadership, but Liverpool appear slightly further along in establishing what their attack should look like.

Andoni Iraola has inherited a Liverpool squad with enormous attacking potential.

Dominik Szoboszlai began Iraola’s pre-season with a goal and an assist, but perhaps the most important development has been Florian Wirtz.

Iraola has indicated that Wirtz will operate in the crucial No.10 role, and the German scored from that position against Leeds before finding the net again against Monaco.

Milos Kerkez has also already shown the attacking instincts that made him so effective under Iraola at Bournemouth.

Newcastle are starting again under Matthias Jaissle and have had a more turbulent summer.

There have nevertheless been encouraging signs.

Yoane Wissa scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Valencia, Newcastle’s first win under Jaissle, while William Osula gives the new manager another direct option through the middle.

St James’ Park will prevent this from becoming comfortable.

Newcastle can make the match physical, attack Liverpool’s defensive line quickly and use the crowd to turn periods of pressure into something more dangerous.

But Liverpool appear to possess more ways to solve the game.

That attacking variety should eventually make the difference.

Fulham vs Chelsea Prediction

Prediction: Fulham 1-2 Chelsea

The opening weekend ends with two new managerial projects separated by only a few miles of west London.

Álvaro Arbeloa has begun reshaping Fulham around a younger and more aggressive team.

Gonzalo García started Fulham’s final three friendly matches, suggesting he has moved ahead of Rodrigo Muniz in the competition to lead the attack following Raúl Jiménez’s departure.

Fulham’s full-backs have also played unusually prominent attacking roles during pre-season. Timothy Castagne scored the winner against Stuttgart, while Antonee Robinson and Ryan Sessegnon have also found the net during the summer.

Chelsea’s transition under Xabi Alonso carries greater expectations.

The Chelsea squad has enough technical quality to dominate possession against most opponents, but Alonso is also trying to construct a defensive structure capable of surviving Premier League transitions.

His final pre-season selections suggested a move towards a back three.

Chelsea also enter Gameweek 1 with one of the summer’s most in-form forwards. João Pedro scored seven pre-season goals, including two in the final victory over Real Sociedad.

That gives Chelsea another route through a game that may otherwise become awkward.

Fulham can score.

Chelsea should create more.

What Could Define Premier League Matchweek 1?

The most interesting feature of opening weekend is not one transfer, one promoted club or even one title contender.

It is uncertainty.

A significant number of Premier League teams are either working under new coaches, adjusting important tactical structures or reintegrating players who returned late following the World Cup.

That makes preparation unusually important.

Arsenal have something many of their rivals do not: continuity, the status of champions and the confidence of beating Manchester City 3-0 immediately before the league season.

Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Fulham are all dealing with substantial tactical or managerial change.

Meanwhile, Coventry, Hull and Ipswich arrive with something established Premier League teams often underestimate.

Momentum.

Recent history warns how difficult survival remains. Six promoted teams were immediately relegated across the two seasons before 2025/26, although Sunderland then provided a striking counterexample by finishing seventh last season. Coventry, Ipswich and Hull now attempt to continue that change in direction.

The opening weekend will not decide the title race.

It will not decide relegation.

But it may give us the first evidence of which summer ideas are already functioning and which still exist mainly on a tactics board.

Premier League Matchweek 1 Predictions: Final Verdict

Arsenal are the strongest prediction of Matchweek 1.

The champions have the continuity, home advantage and recent competitive evidence to make Coventry’s first Premier League match in 25 years an extremely difficult one.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are also backed to begin with victories, although none of those four predictions feels completely safe.

The matches requiring greater caution are Everton against Crystal Palace, Ipswich against Sunderland and Brentford against Tottenham. In each case, there is too little separating the sides to justify a confident winner.

Then there is Bournemouth.

Manchester City remain favourites, but their Community Shield defeat, Rodri’s absence and Bournemouth’s ability to attack transitions make Sunday’s meeting one worth watching closely.

And Newcastle against Liverpool has almost everything required of an opening-weekend headline match: a hostile stadium, tactical change, attacking talent and enough uncertainty for the game to move in either direction.

Those are the predictions.

By Monday night, at least one of them will probably look ridiculous.

That is usually the first sign that the Premier League is properly back.
